Glasgow Bin Hubs – Cleaner Streets or Council Confusion?
Rubbish issues at Greater Govanhill

Glasgow City Council is spending £9.7 million in bid to tackle safety issues and missed rubbish collections with their bin hub roll out.
Bin hubs have been introduced across areas of Glasgow. After an initial £2.5 million roll out, which saw more than 21,000 homes and businesses benefit from the changes the Council has been granted a further £7.2 million to continue this scheme.
Over the last three years, Glasgow Council received more than 3,711 complaints surrounding bin services. The lack of communication from the Council on this subject has residents divided over the efficiency of the new service.
Catriona Carter from Millerston, said: “I know what the bin hubs are and I’ve seen them and they do look good. They’ve not been put in my area yet and I’ve not heard anything from the Council.”
In terms of the reported money spent on this project Catriona said: “It’s a lot of money but if it keeps the bin men safe it’s worth it.”
Jane Smith from Easterhouse said: “I’ve heard about them but not had any built where I live. They do sound a good idea if people are told when they’re coming and how to use them.
She said: “The Council never let you hear anything important. It’s a lot of money for them to be spending that people aren’t told about if we’re the ones supposed to be using them.”
Kacper Szpreglewski of West Lothian said he wasn’t aware of the scheme: “I’ve not heard or seen anything about them, but they sound a good idea. It’d be good if the Council could let people know so they can be used properly.”
Residents appear to agree with the idea of the bin hubs. However, missing communication from the Council seems to be casting doubt and confusion over the efficiency of the new bin hubs.
Gavin Land from Maryhill, said: “There’s been no contact about the plans to build them or how people use them. I’ve seen them in other places though and they look easy and simple enough to use but people will need to be told about this for it to be effective.”
