The day has finally come. An unlucky defeat to Greece on Saturday means that Steve Clarke’s side in typical Scotland fashion have left it to the last minute. These players now have a chance to land Scotland a place at next year's World Cup.

Scotland tonight host Denmark at Hampden. The Danes’ themselves also have a lot to play for. A victory or draw away from home this evening would seal their automatic qualification for World Cup. It promises to be a colossal tie.

The defeat against Greece at the weekend was the first for Scotland in Group C, the team will be looking to recover well and give the Tartan Army something to celebrate long into the evening.

Due to some injuries to key players, the team should look much the same. Fans will be calling for an attacking change though, as Che Adams has missed some massive chances. Hearts talisman Lawrence Shankland seems to be the call as he should provide more of a goalscoring threat.

The Scotland defence weren't at their best against the Greeks. Scott McKenna and Jack Hendry may be brought into the side to switch things up due to the poor performances as of late from Grant Hanley and John Souttar.

Steve Clarke commented on the magnitude of the fixture tonight, he said: “If they go out and play as they can play, then I believe they are good enough to get the result that we need.”

One position set to stay the same however is Craig Gordon. The 42-year-old has defied expectations; the veteran goalkeeper made some crucial saves and kept Scotland from an embarrassing night in Athens.

In terms of Denmark, they fell to a shock draw against Belarus in Copenhagen. This result gave Scotland the chance to still qualify automatically despite the loss at the hands of Greece. Denmark manager Brain Reimer has some selection issues for the tie as they have been hit hard by squad illness. Yet the manager still has loads of belief in his team to get the result they need. Reimer said: “The players will be fired up; this is a big dream for my squad.”

This is a big one for the Danish goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, he currently calls Glasgow his home while playing for Scottish champions Celtic. The 39-year-old will be determined to get to one last major tournament with his country.

For the people of Scotland, you don’t have to explain the importance of this tie. France 98’ was the last time Scotland took part in a World Cup. More than half of the current squad were not born when Scotland qualified for this tournament. This team have the chance to put themselves in the history books and become legends. For one of these two sides, a place at the greatest international competition in football awaits. North America awaits.
