We’ll be coming! Scotland close in on automatic World Cup qualification

By Emily Copeland

With an automatic qualification place up for grabs for the 2026 World Cup, Scotland have it all to play for.

Scotland are currently unbeaten in the group and sit second in the standings, level on points with first place Denmark. Clarke’s men will have to overcome two strong games against Greece and Denmark to secure automatic qualification.

Notable additions to this month’s squad include the return of Falkirk goalkeeper Scott Bain after a six-year absence, whilst other call ups include Josh Doig and Lawrence Shankland.

Key players missing, that were in previous squads, include Angus Gunn and Max Johnston – who are missing due to long-term injuries - with Kieron Bowie also dropping out.

In-form Heart of Midlothian striker Lawrence Shankland will be hopeful of continuing his momentum, with three goals in three games at club level.

Additional call-ups to the squad include Andy Irving and Connor Barron, replacing Lennon Miller and Ross McCrorie who have been dropped due to injuries.

Billy Gilmour will not travel to Turkey for the team training camp due to an ongoing injury, meaning that the midfielder will play no part in the game against Greece. It is yet to be seen if he will be available for Denmark.

If Scotland finish second in the group, then they will have to endure two play-off games in March to determine their fate.

Scotland will take on Greece in Piraeus on Saturday at 19:45 GMT, before they take on Denmark at Hampden on Tuesday evening at the same time slot. Both games will be live on BBC One Scotland.
