Dundee DJs set to spin 45s
By Ally Collingham
‘We Love 45s’ will land at Canvas, Dundee in May, in what is set to be the third ever Scottish event. Vinyl DJs from all over Scotland will each play a 45m set, solely using singles. The collection will feature new artists, as well as Brought-Ferry's home grown ‘The Funky Gunners’. They are well known for their dedication to building a strong local scene through their open decks' nights, Jam Radio sessions, and DJ events such as the Art Bar in Dundee.
The performance will also feature various stalls where you can buy food and drink. Local record shop Thirteen Records will provide a pop-up stall on the day with crates of their finest 45s, while El Dorado Taqueria will serve authentic Mexican fare.
First created in 2019, by London based DJ Criztoz, 45 Day was produced to encourage DJs around the world to organise events on the same day (4-5 May). The medium of 7” vinyl records was chosen to celebrate culture, creativity, and community.
Originally named 45 Day, We Love 45s has continued to grow in popularity, with more than 300 DJs recording and sharing mixes on a regular basis. What started in the UK has blown-up across Europe, into South America, Central America, and Australia, with new cities Glasgow, Edinburgh and now Dundee joining the movement.
Mixes have led to the 45 Day radio show, live streaming on Twitch, DJ sets, interviews, and discussions around mental health and lived experience. The ethos is people and connection.
The Funky Gunners said: “This event marks the same of what we hope will be many We Love 45s events in Dundee. A continuing mission to celebrate 45s, community and connection one record at a time.
“You can expect an eclectic mix of music genres and a welcoming atmosphere ingrained in grassroots vinyl culture.
“Music is the common language, 45s are the connector.”
