Trump claims Jackdaw will make UK "Wealthy again"
By Kristofer Rushford
The UK Government has approved the controversial Jackdaw gas field in the North Sea after years of delay.
It is estimated that the field will provide enough gas to warm 1.4m homes for an entire decade and will increase the UK’s gas production by 6%. However, this accounts for under 3% of the total gas used in the UK, due to a heavy reliance on imports, which the Government say will be reduced through the approval of the field.
Environmental activists have accused Andy Burnham and Miatta Fahnbulleh, Secretary of State for Energy and Net Zero, of ‘climate vandalism’ while claiming that Jackdaw extractions will not lower bills for Brits.
They also claim that Jackdaw will worsen the extreme weather that climate change causes and affect billions across the globe.
But with Jackdaw officially approved, eyes have turned to the proposed Rosebank oil field, off the coast of Shetland, and whether the UK Labour Government will give approval for it also.
The Jackdaw gas field has proved controversial and was subject to long delays after a court challenge.
Nathan Decoupier, 20, Cumbernauld, was unconvinced that the field will help ease the cost-of-living crisis. He said: “I think it is alright, hopefully there is a bonus in terms of lowering bills.
“I have not got much hope though,” he continued.
Tim Johnson was more optimistic however and supports the new field. The 23-year-old, also from Cumbernauld said: “As long as it gets the bills down, I think its alright.”
President Trump weighed into the debate on social media, expressing his support for the new drilling. In a post on Truth Social, he said: “Great news for the wealth and prosperity of the United Kingdom, and the wonderful region of Aberdeen.
“The UK has started drilling in the North Sea, one of the greatest and most prosperous areas of oil in the world.”
Trump also stated that the UK Government should go “Full blast” on drilling, as it would “Make the UK very wealthy again.”
President Trump took to Truth Social to announce his support for the new field.
While Ross Greer, co-leader of the Scottish Green Party claimed the approval was a “disaster.” He said: “It will not lower our energy bills, it will lock us into dependence on gas which is only going to get more expensive in an unstable world.
“We just had five heatwaves in the UK. We can see the climate crisis all around us and we must do everything we can to tackle it,” he continued.
