Why You Should Try Astrophotography
By Archie McFadzean
As we head into January, the cold weather starts to affect people differently, not just with problems relating to the temperature or commuting, but with the rise of poor mental health.
The cold weather discourages people from going outside or from seeing friends and family. This can lead to isolation and more severe consequences, such as the development of depression.
Every year from late December to January, social media and blogs recommend the same meaningless and unhelpful tasks that hold no real substance.
Tasks such as cooking yourself a meal or going for a walk suggest that these tasks will make you happier.
It’s time to differ from the norm and try something different. Astrophotography. Taking a photograph of an object in space. It may sound complicated, but it is a skill that can be developed with ease.
For example, a modern smartphone can be used initially and is effective when viewing close celestial objects such as the moon and satellites.
Why should you pursue this hobby?
It’s beneficial for your mental health in various ways. It pushes you out of your comfort zone and allows you to develop new photography skills. The chance to capture scenic photos will allow you to track your own development and success.
Another reason for trying astrophotography is that it can help develop better patience skills. Being able to capture the right angle and choose the right photo is a beneficial creative skill. In addition to this, you can learn how to further edit the photos, allowing you to develop editorial skills.
When getting into astrophotography, it’s best to take photos on a steady surface, such as a tripod. Finding a suitable area with low lighting will provide the best results.
To improve your skills further, you can purchase a professional camera.
Decent starter cameras include a Canon M100 or a Nikon D3500.
After learning a little more about astrophotography, you may have been encouraged to try it for yourself.
The most important takeaway from this is to remember to apply patience, especially when you are just starting.
It may take multiple attempts before you take a photograph that you are completely satisfied with. Don’t allow this to discourage you, as with a little patience, you will improve.
Most importantly, take time to enjoy your newfound hobby.
