From Gloves to Glory: Three Moments of Goalkeeper-Induced Ecstasy
By Robbie Herbison
Last minute goals. The dream of every fan and player alike. There isn’t a feeling quite like it anywhere else in the world. The drama, the relief, the limbs. It is perfect. There’s only one thing that can improve on your favourite player scoring a last-minute winner at a crucial point in the season, and that’s if it is the goalkeeper that scores it.
A goalkeeper only sent up by management in desperation, so when it pays off it is special. Let’s look at three of the best times a goalkeeper has scored an important late goal.
Antoliy Trubin vs Real Madrid – Matchday 8 of UCL 2025/26
The inspiration for this article a goal in the 98th Minute. Benfica’s Champions League knockout phase qualification is suddenly looking extremely unlikely, despite an inspired performance against 15-time winners Real Madrid.
Goalkeeper, Antoliy Trubin had spent most of stoppage time winding down the clock, thinking that a one goal lead was enough to send them through. Benfica were 3-2 up on the Los Blancos in Lisbon when word spread that they had to win by two goals if they were to stay in the competition.
In the final 10 seconds, the players were informed that they must score again to keep the dream alive. A free kick is awarded to Benfica and up goes Trubin. The cross comes in and the keeper meets the ball with his head, scoring the goal that sends The Reds into the play-off spots. To be forever remembered by the Benfiquistas.
2. Jimmy Glass vs Plymouth Argyle – Final Matchday of the 1998/99 Third Division

This is my favourite of the lot. With all respect given to Jimmy, he would be a relatively unknown footballer if not for this incredible moment. After a relatively underwhelming career in the lower leagues and non-league, Glass was subject of an emergency loan from Swindon Town to Carlisle United.
Carlisle was struggling, facing relegation to non-league. They had injuries to both goalkeepers on the books. In comes Glass to save the day.
On the final matchday of the season, Carlisle had to win to ensure Third Division survival. The score was 1-1 in the final 10 seconds when a corner was awarded. Glass sprinted from his area to get into the box and after a scramble the ball was eventually volleyed in by the loanee.
This sparked amazing scenes, with fans flooding the pitch as that goal may have not only saved their club from relegation, but potentially from extinction. Despite only making three appearances, Jimmy Glass was now a certified Carlisle legend.
3. Alisson Vs West Brom – Premier League Matchday 36 20/21

Alisson Becker is an absolute legend at Liverpool. His 95th minute bullet header only solidified that. In the 2020/21 season Liverpool were struggling, compared to their last season.
It was looking like the reds weren’t going to qualify for Champions League football, especially when the score sat at 1-1 at the Hawthorns, against a poor West Brom side.
Up stepped the Brazilian, meeting Trent Alexander-Arnold’s whipped corner with a header that put the ball into the top corner. Liverpool went on to finish 3rd, securing Champions League football. Alisson Becker was officially an honorary scouser.
It may be a rare sight in football, but when a keeper scores, it really is special. I promise I’m not just saying this because I was a goalie when I was seven.
