A24 has dropped the trailer for their new film, Mother Mary, which features original songs from Britian’s top two experimental artists. Scheduled to release in April 2026, Mother Mary features a stacked cast starring Michaela Coel and Anne Hathaway. Hathaway mentioned in an interview with Vogue that her character is “a sort of Gaga-Taylor Swift hybrid”.
The movie follows pop singer Mary (Anne Hathaway) and her fashion designer Sam (Michaela Coel) through a psychosexual affair sparked by their reunion when Mary is in need for a tour dress.
Mother Mary’s soundtrack is composed by Daniel Hart and will feature original songs from both Charli XCX and FKA Twigs.
Controversy has sparked online as fans have long been speculating an underlying feud between the artists as old tweets resurface.
In February 2023, Charli posted on X: “YES, THIS IS A SUBTWEET - don’t ever be fake to me ever again at a party / in the street / wherever I see you – I know what u say”
After the tweet was posted, fans were quick to judge that the post was in relation to Charli’s lead single, Von Dutch, and artist FKA Twigs. Shortly after the tweet was posted, both the artists were quick to unfollow each other.
Charli’s song Von Dutch, the lead single for her hyperpop album Brat, features savage lyrics that are viewed to be about FKA Twigs.
“It’s okay to admit that you’re jealous of me”, “you’re obsessing”, “I get money, you get mad”
It’s unclear what the true discourse between is, with fans speculating different things. Some are calling Charli out for acting immature whereas others are overlooking the situation entirely.
An anonymous Reddit user commented: “The act of sub tweeting is to me the first indication that this person's maturity level is not where it should be. It's vaguebooking, it's embarrassing, your only goal is to get people speculating.
Infirmitas, commented on Reddit: “IDGAF whatever comes up and someone can screenshot this one day when she does something insane but I fucking love fka twigs and she's in the right bye”
This is the first time the artists have ever collaborated, with neither singer confirming or denying the feud.
