Biffy Clyro – Futique Tour Opening Night Review
By Jordan Henderson
Despite facing several challenges in recent months, Biffy Clyro showed once again why they are one of Britain’s best live acts. There was a lot of intrigue and anxiety surrounding the opening night of the Futique tour due to the absence of bass player James Johnston. But as the band took to the stage in the SSE Arena in Belfast, all those feelings were put to ease. Opening with the anthemic lead single from Futique, ‘A Little Love’, the band had the crowd in the palm of their hands from the very first note of the evening.

Placing fan favourites such as ‘That Golden Rule’ and ‘Who’s Got A Match’ early in the setlist only enhanced the electric energy in the crowd. The production for this show has been taken up a notch compared to previous Biffy tours, with the stage having a quite an elegant look about it. Who knew rock music and elegance could work so well together? The first half of the set was packed with a mix of older material and tracks from their most recent record, Futique. Closing the first set with their tearjerking ballad ‘A Thousand And One ‘was a beautiful choice and gave the audience some room to breathe.

The slow build of ‘Different People’ slowly brought the crowd back up. As soon as the riff kicked in midway through that song, it was all systems go from there. For the next 45 minutes, it was just hit after hit, and the crowd matched the energy of the band, which created a joyous atmosphere. Voices were lost as everyone in that arena belted out ‘Mountains’ from the top of their lungs. Tears were shed during the emotional acoustic sing-along track ‘Machines’, and everyone had a spring in their step whilst bouncing to ‘Bubbles’, a song that is impossible to stay still to. To finish the evening off, everyone hugged their neighbours and used whatever they had left of their voice to create a beautiful moment during ‘Many of Horror’.
Therefore, proving that Biffy Clyro’s live show takes you on an emotional journey that will make you wish you could do it all over again. And luckily for you, that is possible as Biffy Clyro play the OVO Hydro on 21 January.
