Super Bowl LX: Maye the best team win.
By Molly Adam
As we approach the biggest Sunday of the NFL season, the question on everyone’s mind, who is taking home the almighty Lombardi trophy. The Levi’s Stadium in San Francisco awaits the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots for what will be an exciting end to the 2025/26 season.
It’s a return to the biggest stage for the 6-time winners Patriots and the Seahawks are looking to take their tally of Super Bowl wins to two.
Both teams finished the regular season with a record of 14-3. The Seahawks finished the top seed in the National Football Conference, after winning the NFC West.
Therefore, the Seahawks received a bye-week straight into the divisional round where they faced the San Francisco 49ers. The Seahawks won convincingly in Seattle beating the Californian outfit 41-6.
The Seahawks then clinched the Super Bowl spot with a close win over the Los Angeles Rams in the conference round of the playoffs, crowning them the Kings of the NFC.
The Patriots finished the second seed in the AFC finishing behind the Denver Broncos, after winning the American Football Conference East. They then beat the Los Angeles Chargers 16-3, in the wildcard round to start their post-season charge.
In the divisional round, the Patriots beat the Houston Texans to progress closer to the Super Bowl. In a close and low scoring game the Patriots beat the Denver Broncos 10-7. This win saw the Patriots confirm their 12th appearance in the Super Bowl and another AFC conference win under their belt. This is the first Patriots Super Bowl appearance since quarterback Tom Brady left.
Sam Darnold will be making his first appearance as a starter quarterback for the Seahawks on Sunday. Darnold was the backup quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII, which they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in Las Vegas.
Darnold had a standout season in 2024 for the Minnesota Vikings where he led them to the playoffs and picked up a place in the Pro Bowl. This is Darnold’s first season in Seattle and there is no better way to finish it with a ring.
Darnold threw for 4,048 yards in the regular season, this was the fifth highest in the league out of the quarterbacks. He threw for 25 passing touchdowns, which has left him tied-ninth in the rankings this season. Although, in comparison with the 2024 season Darnold has threw for 10 less touchdowns than last year.
Drake Maye has led his New England Patriots to a Super Bowl in his sophomore year. Maye was drafted third overall in the first round of the 2024 draft. In his rookie year, Maye received an invitation to the Pro Bowl, after Bills quarterback Josh Allen pulled out.
He received another this season, but Joe Flacco replaced him. Maye started his rookie season as the backup quarterback and then became the starting quarterback after the team fell to 1-4. Maye only picked up three wins in his first season.
Maye had an impressive season this year, flipping the teams losing record of 4-13 to a winning record in a year. Maye has the highest pass completion rate of the 2025 season with an average of 77.1. He has thrown for 4,394 yards and completed 31 passing touchdowns.
He is now in the running to be crowned the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of this season. The starlet quarterback is playing so well he’s gained a cryptic nickname of Drake ‘Drake Maye’ Maye, which no one really understands the meaning of, but it is cool, nonetheless.
Both teams are worthy of winning the Lombardi trophy on Sunday and will come down to which team is the better team on the day. It would be a great week for Maye if he was to win MVP and get himself his first Super Bowl ring within days of each other. For Darnold, it would be one of the best comeback stories, from backup to Super Bowl winning quarterback.
The game has a British kick-off time of 11:30pm and is live on Sky Sports from 10pm.
