Bonfire Night: Police Scotland launch massive operation in Glasgow

Police Scotland is currently preparing for its largest deployment since President Trump's visit from the US to Glasgow in July ahead of Bonfire night and the European Championship clash between Celtic and Besiktas.

Operation Moonbeam is set to take place tonight to try and prevent any dangers, anti-social behaviour in Glasgow.

Firework control zones have been placed across Glasgow to prevent anyone setting off fireworks in private and garden areas.

Police Scotland are also currently preparing for tonight’s Europa League clash between Celtic FC and Turkey’s own Beşiktaş.

The zones are set to operate up until to November 9.

The police have been granted the power to break up groups of two or more people, who they feel are causing distress.

Whilst breaking up groups if needed, they have the authority to ensure they don't return for 48 hours.

Police Scotland are working closely with the fire departments across Scotland tonight, embedding officers in the fire stations. This will help to tackle any antisocial use of pyrotechnics.

We asked the people of Glasgow their opinions on how the Police are dealing with this situation.

Michael Walsh said: “With both Besiktas and Celtic and their history of their supporters, I understand why these measures are being taken.”

In addition, more officers have been utilising dispersal zones to help limit anti-social zones, which have in the past, been an evolving problem in Glasgow.

Ava Barclay said: “I think it is the correct thing to do; it ensures that everyone is safe.”

Last November, the fire service took on 750 calls at control rooms on Bonfire night and attended more than 250 incidents.

Kyle Milne said: “I think having more than enough security, police and fire services available is the right action to take.”

Both bonfire night and the Celtic game are two big occasions and will involve mass amounts of people. As well as attracting many people to the city centre of Glasgow.

With thousands of both Celtic and Beşiktaş supporters heading to Parkhead, alongside bonfire night celebrations across Glasgow, it could prove to be a busy evening for Police Scotland.
