Ruthless, Roofless Steel.

World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) found themselves at Petco Park in San Diego California this weekend for their 39th annual Survivor Series. For the first time ever, the Premium Live Event (PLE) took place in an outdoor venue, in a stadium and in a Major League Baseball stadium all at once. It broke the record attendance for any Survivor Series event ever, with an astonishing 46,016 people in attendance. It was also the fourth annual Survivor Series event based around the WarGames Match; a team-based steel cage match where a roofless steel cage surrounds two rings placed side by side.

The show opened with the Women’s WarGames match. It saw Iyo Sky; Rhea Ripley, Aj Lee; Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss face off against Lash Legend; Nia Jax, Becky Lynch; Asuka and Kairi Sane. It was a time to showcase new ring gear, with Ripley wearing attire based off Art the Clown and Flair honouring seven-year-old- fan Scarlett with her new ring gear. Iyo and her teammates survived a dominating onslaught from the heels and Flair and Ripley showed that they could co-exist despite previous heat. Despite the aggression from Jax and Legend, Iyo and her teammates capitalised on openings to take a win. The match suffered pacing issues but as the match drew on, many of the superstars got their chance at the spotlight and showcased their talent.

The women’s WarGames wasn’t the only cage match featured at Survivor Series. The men’s WarGames match saw CM Punk; Jimmy Uso, Cody Rhodes; Roman Reigns and Jey Uso facing off against Bronson Reed; Drew McIntyre, Bronn Breakker; Logan Paul and Brock Lesnar. The all-star match clashed with intense high impact moves that saw both teams stealing momentum. Despite the large names at play, the match felt centred around only a handful of superstars such as Brock Lesnar, Roman Reigns and Bronn Breakker. While the other performers were present in the action it felt as if they were there to bump around and showcase the other three. Despite the high impact action, the match ended due to interference from a mystery attacker clad in a mask wearing all black. The opening allowed team Lesnar to steal an anti-climactic win.

All in all, this year’s Survivor Series lacked any real grit or energy to work as a successful end to many built up stories and no feud feels resolved.
