The Yantar, a Russian intelligence ship, was spotted on Scotland’s northern borders. This isn’t the first time the ship has entered UK waters, but it is the first time it has provoked the British Government.

On Wednesday at a news conference in Downing Street, Defense Secretary John Healey said the ship pointed lasers at pilots that were monitoring its activities. When asked about the dangers of the lasers, Healey said: "Anything that impedes, disrupts or puts at risk pilots in charge of British military planes is deeply dangerous."

The ship will continue to be monitored as it is suspected it was designed for gathering information and mapping UK undersea cables, which are essential for our internet use and connection around the world.

Should the Yantar change its course and sail closer to the shores, there are military options ready to combat it.

Only one RAF crew member was affected by the laser, meaning there was no damage or injuries; however, this situation is being seen and assessed as a threat.

The Russian Embassy responded to the situation on X, stating:

“The British leadership's endless accusations and suspicions only cause a smile. Russia's actions do not impinge upon the interests of the United Kingdom, nor are they intended to undermine its security. We have no interest in British undersea cables.”

They also accused the UK government of Russophobia, claiming the Yantar is an oceanographic research ship and has no interest in undersea cables.
