'You got to Rohl with it'
By Luca Menichetti
On Monday afternoon, after the departure of Head Coach Russell Martin just 123 days after his appointment, Rangers faced three rejections from Steven Gerrard, Kevin Muscat and Danny Rohl himself. Rohl, 36, had originally dropped out of the race just under a week before re-entering the race. But what do we know about the German international?
Rohl started off his managerial career with RB Leipzig from 2010-2014 being a part of the coaching staff for the youth team for 29 games. His original role was video analyst before moving onto to being the assistant manager alongside German international Frank Leicht. He then made the step up to Leipzig U17s, again as assistant coach till 2014.
Later in the year Rohl made the push up to senior level football, from the 2014/15 Bundesliga season when he was back to the role of video analyst for the Leipzig senior team. This helped Rohl gain much more managerial experience, working alongside more recognised managers such as ex- Southampton manager and Austrian international Ralph Hasenhuttl for 83 games.
He also worked with former Manchester United coach and German international Ralph Rangnick for 36 games, as well as German internationals Alexander Zorniger for 22 games and Achim Beierlorzer for his last 15 games.
After his adventure in homeland Germany, Rohl went to England and his new gig in the South coast to be Ralph Hasenhuttl’s number two at the time Premier league club Southampton in the 18/19 where he was in the dugout for 24 games. His first game in the Southampton dugout, was a 1-0 defeat away to eventual relegated Cardiff City on November 8th, 2018.
After the short Southampton stint Rohl found himself back in Germany, being the assistant coach for the successful club in Germany Bayern Munich. Once again being in the assistant manager role, first to Croation international Niko Kovac for 15 games and Germany international Hansi Flick where he won the 2020 champions league with a 1-0 win over French side PSG and was there for 85 games.
Rohl went onto the international stage to be Hansi Flick’s number two for the German national team from 2021-2023. He was in the coaching staff when Germany had a disaster in the World Cup in Qatar where the Die Nationalmannschaft (The National Team) got knocked out in the group stages.
Championship side Sheffield Wednesday was Rohl’s first tenure as a manager from 2023 up until this past summer and left by mutual consent as Wednesdays financial difficulties. His playing style he introduced to the South Yorkshire side is very offensive and put his players on a high press and the formation he mainly used was a 4-2-3-1. He managed 89 games for Wednesday getting 34 wins, 19 draws and 36 loses which totalled to a 38.2%-win rate.
So, what can we expect from Rohl? On paper we can see the significant risk that Sporting Director Kevin Thelwell and CEO Patrick Stewart have taken to get here. But this can go either one of two ways, either he succeeds or he fails, and Rangers might be on the course for one of their worst seasons ever recorded in the topflight. But his type of football seems to be more exciting for Rangers fans than what Russell Martin had to serve up.
