Hazbin Hotel review

By Darrell Wilson

Hazbin Hotel’s soundtrack debuted at no.13 on the US billboard 200 chart

Hazbin Hotel has been a frequent talking point when it comes to independent animation since the pilot released in late 2019, but the release of the full series in January of this year raises some questions. Was the wait worth it?

The answer as it turns out yes, yes it was worth the wait. As Hazbin Hotel had the largest debut of any Amazon Prime show it shows that people were more than happy to tune in and see an animated musical set in hell.

Hazbin Hotel is a work of pure passion as you can tell by watching the original piolet as well as the show proper. It is truly an achievement that this show was made and is something all young people working in animation can look up to.

Hazbin Hotel is a charming show that combines good animation, voice acting and music to make a show that is truly enjoyable to watch. That being said the show isn’t perfect and has some significant faults but that can be said about even the greatest works the media has produced.

Hazbin is a musical or at least can be classed as one, it has got two songs per episode and most of them are great. The first two episodes alone have some of the best songs of the season, the songwriters Sam Haft and Andrew Underberg. Clearly knew what they were doing when they made this soundtrack.

The voice acting is also top-notch for the season as it sounds like the cast had a lot of fun with what they were doing. With stars like Keith David and Alex Brighment in the cast it was always going to be great, almost all the voice actors do a great job with one or two exceptions. Stephanie Beatriz who isthe voice of Vaggie is noticeably worse than in the pilot, this is quite surprising as Stephanie Beatriz has proven her voice acting talents in other works such as Disney's Encanto.

Even though this show is great it does have one glaring flaw, its pacing for most of the episodes is quite rushed, and this does not give a lot of time for the characters who are great to really shine. Watching the show, it feels like the scriptwriters didn't know if they were going to get a season two and rushed through as much plot as they could in 8 episodes.

The pacing issues do make it a bit hard and confusing to watch at times but it never gets so bad that it is unenjoyable. I think everyone who watched this season will be excited for season 2 which will hopefully fix the small issues that season one had.
