Glasgow residents and visitors have been enraged as the council announce plans to increase restricted parking until 10pm, seven days a week, across all controlled parking areas in the city.

Currently there are 24 controlled parking areas in the city - four of which already have restrictions from 08:00-22:00, with a one further area operation restrictions from 08:00-00:00.

It is a move that, according to the council’s budget proposal, will offer a saving of £686,000 by the end of 2027.

However, this has sparked controversy with people in Glasgow as 9,500 people take to a petition, to ensure the plan doesn’t go through.

The increase has prompted fears of damage a potential extension could do to the hospitality sector.

Aidan Barlow, a 24-year-old student, said: “I think it will completely ruin the hospitality sector, especially the staff members, it means they’ll almost have to pay a parking tax on every shift they do.”

Many people are also split in terms of what it will do to small businesses around Glasgow, whether a move like this will help increase footfall or drive people away from the city centre.

Kaitlyn Hutton, a 21-year-old from Hamilton, believes it could either make or break small business.

She said: “On one hand I think people will discover more small businesses as they’ll be walking about more in town, but at the same time I think it could deter people coming into town all together, as things are just getting more and more expensive.”

Glasgow City Council are using this, along with the LEZ introduced last June to show their progression on the eco -friendly front.
