Kilmarnock 1-0 Dundee United: Three things we learned
Kilmarnock ran out 1-0 winners in a bottom six battle at Rugby Park. Let’s look into the three main talking points from the game…
McInnes’ men bounce back
Going into this match, Kilmarnock and Dundee United were level on points. The home side were at the foot of the table due to their inferior goal difference and with recent results and a quiet winter window, a lot of pressure was on Killie. However, they responded and got themselves a much-needed three points with Daniel Armstrong’s goal after 35 minutes all that separated the two sides. The Ayrshire side will undoubtedly feel they could have scored more with six shots on target and an additional 21 efforts which were not headed towards goal.
United lacking invention
Liam Fox’s Dundee United side offered very little in an attacking sense, apart from the final 20 minutes. However, it could have been very different for the Tangerines if they hadn’t missed a spot-kick in the 25th minute. Scott McMann was pulled down in the box by Daniel Armstrong, but former Scotland international Steven Fletcher had his penalty saved by Kilmarnock ‘keeper Sam Walker.
Relegation looming?
The bottom half of the Premiership is incredibly tight. Before last night’s game, Kilmarnock were bottom and their win takes them up to ninth as a result of St Johnstone’s victory over Motherwell. The relegation battle is very difficult to call, but based on the action at Rugby Park, Kilmarnock look to be in a better position compared to their relegation rivals.
