Cinch Scottish League One: Three Things we Learned as Airdrie cut gap on Cove

It was another entertaining week in League One as we enter the final month of the 2021/2022 season with the battle for the league trophy set to go down to the wire…

Gallagher at the double as Diamonds cut gap on Cove to three points

A brace from Callum Gallagher either side of each half proved to be enough as Airdrie cut the deficit on league leaders Cove to three points. The victory for Ian Murray’s Diamonds sees them extend their unbeaten run to 16 matches, having last tasted defeat in December of last year.

Meanwhile, courtesy of Dumbarton and Peterhead’s away wins over Alloa and Clyde respectively, the Fifers are now 11 points adrift of safety with their six-year stint in League One looking likely to be coming to an end…

Next Saturday, East Fife visit Queen’s Park at Firhill while Airdrie take the trip up north to face Montrose- where a win for the North Lanarkshire side would ensure they won’t finish any lower than second.

Airdrieonians manager, Ian Murray said: “A good, professional performance. The run has been fantastic, 16 games unbeaten with 11 wins and we knew how important it was to put pressure on Cove Rangers, but we’ve been saying it for weeks, we just need to keep winning our games and for the majority of them we have been.”

Last-gasp equaliser for Cove as league leaders suffer wobble in title battle

Leighton McIntosh struck deep into stoppage time to cancel out Robert McHugh’s opening goal as the league leaders came from behind to share the spoils with Queen’s Park at Firhill. The draw, coupled with Airdrie’s win over East Fife, sees Paul Hartley’s league leaders lose momentum as their hold on top spot is cut to three points with four games remaining…

Meanwhile, for the Spiders, they are now seven points in front of fifth-placed Falkirk and move a step closer to securing the final play-off spot. The Glasgow side welcome East Fife to Maryhill next week, where a win and Falkirk defeat would seal the play-off position for Owen Coyle’s men.

Queen’s Park First Team Coach, John Potter said: “Obviously we are disappointed to lose a late goal, but I thought we were the better team, especially the first- half and we deserved the win.”

Dumbarton beat Alloa in five-goal thriller to remain four points off safety

Kristoff Syvertsen struck at the death to seal a vital three points for Dumbarton in their fight for survival. Five goals were scored in a frantic final 15 minutes, with Blaise Riley-Snow opening the scoring for Alloa in the 82nd minute, before a spot-kick and goal from Dumbarton’s Conner Duthie in the 86th and 88th minute respectively swung the game in the visitor’s favour. The drama wasn’t over yet as the referee pointed to the spot with Stefan Scougall slotting home the equaliser for the Wasps a minute into added time until Syvertsen grabbed the winner.

The victory for Stevie Farrell’s Sons’ is a real boost to their survival hopes, as despite Peterhead’s 3-0 away victory at Clyde which means they remain four points adrift of safety, they are now seven points clear of rock- bottom East Fife with four games remaining. The win also gives the Sons’ confidence going into next Saturday season-defining match at home to Peterhead, knowing a win would move them a mere point from safety.

Meanwhile, the defeat for Alloa sees the Wasps fail to take advantage of Clyde’s defeat to Peterhead, as a win would’ve seen them go a point behind fifth-placed Falkirk, who lost 3-0 at home to Montrose. The Wasps welcome Clyde to the Indodrill next week. Dumbarton manager, Stevie Farrell said: “It’s a massive

result, but we won’t get carried away, Peterhead won and we knew that through the course of the game, so we had to win. We’ve kept the pressure on, there’s four games to go and a lot of points and football to play for.”
